How Levitra works

During sexual stimulation, nitric oxide is released in penile tissue, generating cGMP that relaxes smooth muscle and increases blood flow. Vardenafil blocks the PDE5 enzyme that breaks down cGMP. The result is stronger and more sustained erectile response when you are sexually aroused.

How and when to take

  • Timing: take a tablet about 60 minutes before sexual activity.
  • Food: may be taken with or without food; heavy, high-fat meals can delay onset.

Important precautions

  • High or low blood pressure

  • Bleeding disorders, for example hemophilia
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcers
  • Hearing problems, vision changes, or inherited eye disorders like retinitis pigmentosa
  • Peyronie's disease or other anatomical penile deformities
  • Advised by a clinician to avoid sexual activity for health reasons

Who must not use it

  • Allergy to vardenafil or any component of the tablet.
  • Concurrent nitrate therapy of any form, including nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, or isosorbide mononitrate. Recreational nitrates like amyl nitrite or nitrite (poppers) also apply. Combining these can trigger a dangerous blood pressure drop.
  • Use of soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat.

Possible side effects

Stop the medication and seek urgent medical evaluation if any of the following occur:

  • Symptoms of a heart attack: chest pain or pressure, nausea, sweating, pain that spreads to jaw, neck, or shoulder
  • Sudden vision loss or new visual disturbances
  • Priapism: a painful erection or an erection lasting longer than 4 hours

Common effects that are usually mild and short-lived include:

  • Flushing or warmth
  • Nasal congestion or sinus discomfort
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Dyspepsia or stomach upset
  • Back pain

Drug interactions

Do not use Bottled Levitra at the same time as other erectile dysfunction medicines. Combining PDE5 inhibitors can cause adverse effects and low blood pressure.

Tell your clinician and pharmacist about every prescription, OTC product, and supplement you take. Notable interactions include but are not limited to:

  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors: ritonavir, cobicistat, indinavir, saquinavir, atazanavir
  • Moderate CYP3A4 inhibitors: erythromycin, clarithromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole
  • Alpha blockers for the prostate or blood pressure: tamsulosin, silodosin, doxazosin, terazosin, alfuzosin, prazosin
  • Antiarrhythmics: amiodarone, sotalol, quinidine, procainamide, dronedarone
  • Other PDE5 inhibitors: sildenafil, tadalafil, avanafil

Missed dose

Vardenafil for ED is taken only as needed, not on a fixed schedule. Do not take more than one dose in a 24 hour period.
